The main requirements for journals
In my humble opinion there are several main requirements for good journal. What are the most important requirements to start a magazine?
First of all, it`s a good writing content. Content is King.
Good text should be unique and engage the reader. You need to choose your headlines carefully. They should call, intrigue, shock. Food & Wine vs. Bon Appétit. People vs. Us Weekly. Time vs. Newsweek. Sports Illustrated vs. ESPN The Magazine. In each case, you have titles presenting the same territory. But they aren’t the same.
Here’s why: The people who produce each of these titles have worked hard to cultivate a voice and tone, an editorial philosophy or a point of view – a personality, really – that’s unique to that brand.
It is also important to choose main topics in the magazine. Two or three will be enough. It is desirable that the topics be related, such as beauty and health, business and technology.
I think you need to know who you are writing for. For example, if I write about fashion, then my audience is young girls aged 16-30.
Amazing journal still needs digital content. If Content is King, then I can say that Photography is Queen. Good photos in today’s world are half the battle. You need to have the only unique style of photos to stand out and be unforgettable. You can cooperate with different photographers.
In nowadays world it is very important to create unusual content and be different from competitors. Thanks to Instagram, Facebook and other social networks, the content has reached a new, higher level.
Good media content is trending also. It can be more advanced, dynamic and direct social ads; video content; growth of social media communities and go on.
It is important to have a very good graphic content. It must be unique. Video content is also very popular. Here’s a list of my favorite visual marketing tools: Canva, Adobe Spark Post, Adobe Spark Video, Audacity, VidLab, THETA+.
There are several important elements in a magazine layout, such as headline, image, image caption, running head, byline, subhead, body copy, etc. Magazine need a structure. I know some:
1. First of all it should be cover pages
2. Front-of-the-book content, which may include: a table of contents, a masthead, columns and assorted departments such as letters to the editor, news, quick-hit trend pieces and publisher-focused content
3. The feature well – two to five long-form articles that are more extensively reported and more creatively designed
4. Back-of-the-book content, which may include: more columns and more departments (for example: reader-engagement pieces, such as quizzes and puzzles, and product-focused content, such as reviews)
Marketing is also important. You need a knowledge of targeting, social media marketing, search engine reputation management, search engine optimization. You need to be able to present your product to the public.
It is important to be disciplined, to have a good knowledge of time management, to have excellent journalism and reporting skills, to have solid management skills, knowledge of media production and communication, to be flexible and open to change.
Online magazines have become an inseparable element of the publishing world and their growth is particularly noticeable today. It is very interesting to create content. You will love it!
